Are Crumble’s Just for Cooler Months? |
I am sure many of us have fond memories of a homemade apple crumble on a cold Fall or Winter's evening, made with love by a Mom or Grandmother. But to me crumble evokes summer dining memories. While I grew up as a city kid my parents came from a long line of farmers, apple orchardist in Tasmania Australia, where we would spend our summers. In addition to apples, they grew a large variety of vegetables and fruits. During the summer there was always a seemingly endless supply of plums, greengages, apricots, peaches, nectarines, rhubarb, blackberries, raspberries and cherries. There were also milking cows on the property and butter was churned every Thursday. For a hard-working woman on the land with a supply of fruits and butter, the humble crumble was a staple all summer. Large amounts were made to ensure there were leftovers at breakfast time for the bottomless pits of myself and my many cousins. That said, there was usually no crumble topping left by the morning, just stewed fruits for our cereal. |
